Police Issue Tickets in Auto Accident at Village Parking Lot

On Friday, April 15th Riverside Police completed their investigation into an auto accident that took place on Friday, April 8th, 2011. The accident was reported to police on Wednesday, April 13th. On April 8th, a 39 years of age male resident of Riverside was struck as he was riding his bike through the parking lot just east of the Police and Fire Departments. The driver backed his vehicle into the pedalcyclist as he was attempting to park within the lot. The driver and pedalcyclist stopped and spoke for several minutes, exchanging information. At the time of the accident the pedalcyclist reported no injuries. The victim's parents came into the police station on Wednesday, April 13th to file a report.

After a two day investigation, Riverside Police issued tickets to Michael C. Gorman, 60 of Riverside, for improper backing and failure to report an accident to police. During the follow up investigation, it was learned that the bicyclist was, in fact, injured. Mr. Gorman posted bond on the tickets.

Riverside Police Chief Tom Weitzel stated, "This accident and investigation was handled in the same manner as any other accident investigation this agency conducts. Once the investigation was completed, tickets were issued in accordance with current Illinois Vehicle Code Statues."

The public is reminded that a signed complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal and traffic cases are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Nice to know that our elected officials are law-abiding citizens. In an earlier life, wasn't he an attorney?

He didn't run....It says right there, he and the victim stopped and spoke for several minutes, exchanging information. Who knows what they discussed? Maybe Gorman told him he was Lonnie Sacchi or Ben Sells....maybe he promised him a job driving the street sweeper or as the new fire chief. It was all an accident, something future generations will realize electing the RCA board was.

What time of day did this occur? This is right in the parking lot of the police department! Why did a 39 year old cyclist need his parents to report the incident 5 days later? Can the village be sued for this victim's injuries?

It is my understanding that the man was mentally handicapped. Steps away from the police department and Goram did not report the incident! Truly irresponsible! And the police used manpower to investigate the incident for two days! This is shameful!

What the hell is Gorman thinking? What person would have acted this same way? He probably panicked and didn't want to take responsibility for his actions. That's the way he has been acting towards multiple issues our village faces. Does this really surprise anyone?

Doesn't Shevitz have an obligation to inform the public when it comes to things like this? Open and transparent government?

Gorman broke the law. That is the bottom line.
Wasn't he an attorney? Didn't this happen next to the police station?
Would it of been too much to ask of the village president to report this by walking 30 feet? The police had to waste two days on this investigation? How can someone in his position act this way? This is pathetic to say the least!

According to the statute, if someone is injured, reporting to the police is mandatory.

Sec. 11-403. Duty to give information and render aid. The driver of any vehicle involved in a motor vehicle accident resulting in injury to or death of any person or damage to any vehicle which is driven or attended by any person shall give the driver's name, address, registration number and owner of the vehicle the driver is operating and shall upon request and if available exhibit such driver's license to the person struck or the driver or occupant of or person attending any vehicle collided with and shall render to any person injured in such accident reasonable assistance, including the carrying or the making of arrangements for the carrying of such person to a physician, surgeon or hospital for medical or surgical treatment, if it is apparent that such treatment is necessary or if such carrying is requested by the injured person.

If none of the persons entitled to information pursuant to this Section is in condition to receive and understand such information and no police officer is present, such driver after rendering reasonable assistance shall forthwith report such motor vehicle accident at the nearest office of a duly authorized police authority, disclosing the information required by this Section.

Any person failing to comply with this Section shall be guilty of a Class A misdemeanor.

After reading the posted statute, and just to be "devil's advocate", if the biker said he wasn't hurt wouldn't you "move on"?

The fact that the biker is the age of an adult would not make one think his mother/parents might call the cops later with a different story.

The driver and pedal cyclist stopped and spoke for several minutes, exchanging information. At the time of the accident the pedal cyclist reported no injuries. The victim's parents came into the police station on Wednesday, April 13th to file a report.

    Just saying~
