Police Issue Tickets in Auto Accident at Village Parking Lot
On Friday, April 15th Riverside Police completed their investigation into an auto accident that took place on Friday, April 8th, 2011. The accident was reported to police on Wednesday, April 13th. On April 8th, a 39 years of age male resident of Riverside was struck as he was riding his bike through the parking lot just east of the Police and Fire Departments. The driver backed his vehicle into the pedalcyclist as he was attempting to park within the lot. The driver and pedalcyclist stopped and spoke for several minutes, exchanging information. At the time of the accident the pedalcyclist reported no injuries. The victim's parents came into the police station on Wednesday, April 13th to file a report.
After a two day investigation, Riverside Police issued tickets to Michael C. Gorman, 60 of Riverside, for improper backing and failure to report an accident to police. During the follow up investigation, it was learned that the bicyclist was, in fact, injured. Mr. Gorman posted bond on the tickets.
Riverside Police Chief Tom Weitzel stated, "This accident and investigation was handled in the same manner as any other accident investigation this agency conducts. Once the investigation was completed, tickets were issued in accordance with current Illinois Vehicle Code Statues."
The public is reminded that a signed complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal and traffic cases are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
