A friend at the Zoo sent me this just now. These dogs make great companions... there are a few rescued greyhounds in Riverside already. Let's get more...

Dairyland Greyhound Racetrack in Kenosha, Wisconsin will be closing on December 31, 2009. 900 Greyhounds need to be adopted. Contact Joanne Kehoe, Operations Director, at (312) 559-0887, or contact the Dairyland Race Track Adoption Center direct at (262) 612-8256

Wisconsin State law provides that the greyhounds are to be adopted to new homes, sent to another racetrack for racing purposes or returned to their owners. Our kennel compound will remain open until all greyhounds are properly placed.

(11/19/2009) - DGP Important Closing - Dog Status

Wisconsin State law provides that the greyhounds are to be adopted to new homes, sent to another racetrack for racing purposes or returned to their owners. Our kennel compound will remain open until all greyhounds are properly placed.

We do not know at this current time how many greyhounds in total will become available for adoption until we finish racing on December 31st, 2009.

We do currently have greyhounds available for adoption in our adoption center. You are more than welcome to fill out an application at Dairyland or online at our website www.dairylandgreyhoundpark.com under the adoption tab at the top of the webpage.

More - the posts on the dogs being destroyed are bogus, BTW.

    Greyhounds Available for Adoption
    Dairyland Adoption Application

On the track, the racing greyhound is known for his speed, intelligence and love of the chase. An incomparable performer, the greyhound's ability is often measured in terms of desire and spirit. A greyhound's trainer calls it “heart.”

And when the time comes for the canine athlete to retire, again, his heart shows. Through active programs designed to place retired greyhounds into homes as pets, thousands of families across the country have discovered what the greyhound trainers have known all along: That the greyhound's “heart” beats on long after his racing days are through. Off the track, the greyhound is a quiet, sensitive, playful and loving creature. Gentle with children, eager to please, and affectionate with one and all, the greyhound is the perfect pet and companion. We at Dairyland Greyhound Park invite you to bring a loving and gentle retired greyhound into your home and into your life.

While at Dairyland Greyhound Park, stop by our greyhound adoption office, located in the grandstand. You'll get to meet and be greeted by one of our adoptable greyhound friends, and can see for yourself their delightful, friendly nature. Grandstand hours on Sunday and Wednesday matinee performances are 12:20 pm to 3:30 pm. On Saturdays they are open from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm and evening performance hours are 6:45 pm to 9:00 pm. Our Adoption Center is open seven days a week, please call for an appointment. The Adoption Center is located just east of the park on 104th Avenue.

Our greyhound adoption program has a simple goal: To place good dogs with good people. Families interested in adopting a greyhound must fill out a screening questionnaire and participate in a personal interview with our Greyhound Adoption Coordinator. Greyhounds placed as pets will be spayed or neutered, brought up to date on all appropriate shots and vaccinations, and will undergo a thorough health examination by a licensed veterinarian. The adopting family must pay a $175 fee to help cover these costs.

We ask for serious applicants only. Bringing a new pet into a home requires a degree of commitment and responsibility. But if you're ready for an addition to your family, we have a greyhound ready for you. For further information contact the Diaryland Greyhound Adoption Office at (262) 612-8256.

Don, It does not have to be a greyhound, although I do see a need.
Adopting is nice, but there is a desperate need for fosters as well.
All one needs to do is google their breed of choice name with the word "rescue." Amazing what pops up!
For me, Aussie's are in need like greyhounds as well. They got too popular, and now there are so many crooked/evil breeders. It is the saddest thing.
They are so darn cute! So smart, and such great characters. We are on our third rescue from these guys. (Although the current puppy IS going to kill me!)

Five years from now, we will be looking at Portuguese Water Dog rescues. So sad!
