    Jack read a press release tonight at the start of the meeting announcing that the village board has abandoned their pursuit of the TIF.

    A big thanks to all those who started and led this effort to prevent yet more ugly overdevelopment from coming to Riverside, lifted an extra threat of eminent domain from citizens who did not have expensive lawyers to defend them, and to prevent the diversion of naturally occurring tax increases from the normal taxing bodies.

    If it were not for you who established this website, held the meetings, wrote the flyers, etc., people like me would have had nowhere to go. Indeed I did not know if was living in a blighted proposed redevelopment area until I received one of these flyers from a neighbor who received it at her church.

    We all no doubt remain interested in the beautification of downtown and in the financial health of the village, and will no doubt have occasion to demonstrate that with effect to the Board in future, despite the tone struck in the press release.

    Hear hear!

    For free expression!

    For HTML and CCR and the Admin! (I am glad Al Gore invented the internet! )

    For the Village Board!

    For gas lamps in the 21st century and traffic calming curvilinear spaces

    For being 1 in 75 +

    For Riverside!

    Riverside IS special.

    Let's show other towns how it should be done.

    It is morning in Riverside, sprinkling diamonds over the Desplaines

    *The head of the EDC in Riverside said that he has never seen a Village take a pause to listen to the voters before doing a TIF. He said he has worked in around 75 or so TIFs.

    You flagg'd walks of the cities! you strong curbs at the edges!
    You ferries! you planks and posts of wharves! you timber-lined sides! you distant ships!
    You rows of houses! you window-pierc'd façades! you roofs!
    You porches and entrances! you copings and iron guards!
    You windows whose transparent shells might expose so much!
    You doors and ascending steps! you arches!
    You gray stones of interminable pavements! you trodden crossings!
    From all that has been near you, I believe you have imparted to yourselves, and now would impart the same secretly to me;
    From the living and the dead I think you have peopled your impassive surfaces, and the spirits thereof would be evident and amicable with me.

    The earth expanding right hand and left hand,
    The picture alive, every part in its best light,
    The music falling in where it is wanted, and stopping where it is not wanted,
    The cheerful voice of the public road—”the gay fresh sentiment of the road.

    O highway I travel! O public road! do you say to me, Do not leave me?
    Do you say, Venture not? If you leave me, you are lost?
    Do you say, I am already prepared—”I am well-beaten and undenied—”adhere to me?

    O public road! I say back, I am not afraid to leave you—”yet I love you;
    You express me better than I can express myself;
    You shall be more to me than my poem.

    I think heroic deeds were all conceiv'd in the open air, and all great poems also;
    I think I could stop here myself, and do miracles;
    (My judgments, thoughts, I henceforth try by the open air, the road;)
    I think whatever I shall meet on the road I shall like, and whoever beholds me shall like me;
    I think whoever I see must be happy.

    RIP TIF. A bad idea finally laid to rest. Unfortunately upwards of $150,000 have probably been squandered on this thing (including that bogus TOD study that the consultants have used in countless communiies to leverage their way in and get more.) That money could have been spent for so many useful things. In reading the Press Release released by the Village President I see that he neither mentions that fact nor apologizes for wasting so many tax dollars, but has room to chastise those who opposed him. That act is wearing very thin, and I think few will be taken in by it. The net result is a monumental wastage of Village funds and a deal for the Arcade restoration that will end up costing about $450,000 or more over time. So what did we get for all this - we will ahve that ugly monster in our midst for all time (the VC) and some level of restoration on the Arcade for about a total expenditure of three quarters of a million dollars of Village monies. I hope this won't be forgotten when the next election rolls around. Now we need to get positive and make improvements based on intelligent thinking and not some grab to sequester funds for ill-defined schemes. And as for the schools - their cowardly leading-from-behind behavour should not be forgotten either. Where the hell were they when it wastime to stand up?

    Catherine,

    Is that Walt Whitman, your own poem, or someone else's?

    Nice.

    Heh, heh. Of course that is old Walt, from Song of the Open Road. The cadences and tone in your preceding post brought it to mind. I would figuratively cut off my hand to be able to write poetry like that!
