Help with our Petition

We are ready to begin the process of collecting signatures. You can help us by printing out a petition and gathering signatures (they must be registered Riverside voters and their signature must match the way they signed their voter registration card). It is estimated that we need about 400 signatures to assure the TIF question be included on the next ballot in April. But it would make a much larger impact in our village if we had thousands.

You can download a copy of the petition right here in PDF or Microsoft Word format, whichever you prefer.

There are some issues with this petition that you may want to share as you collect signatures:

  1. By signing the petition you are not deciding whether or not you think Riverside should enact a TIF, only that you request the right as an American citizen in a democracy to VOTE on a program that is estimated to cost $20 Million. Hopefully, our chance to vote will come in April 2007.
  2. This referendum is only ‘advisory‘, which means the results of the election are not at all binding. The results will basically be the public’s opinion, nothing more. It is completely legal in the State of Illinois for our elected officials to pass a TIF district without our consent.
  3. A TIF (tax increment financing) District siphons off the natural growth of a properties value (the increment) to creates a special fund. Millions of dollars in bonds can be taken out against this fund & used within the district for incentives to attract developers. A good thing to remind everyone is that there is a crane in the center of town!

After you are finished collecting signatures, use your local bank to get the petition notarized to make your hard work official! Please note: all petitions need to be returned by January 18th. Please call 442-3166 when you are done or if you have any questions.

Thanks!

We are not coordinating an effort, just hopeful that our friends and neighbors will print a copy of the petition and share it with their neighbors and friends.  If everyone that printed it could collect just 15 signatures it would be amazing!  If someone wants to hit the streets in a bigger way, they should contact us (top bullet on this page) and we will advise them which areas have already been covered in the Village.  Don’t forget, ALL petitions need to be returned notarized by JAN. 18 2007!  Thanks so much for your help!
